What up everyone! My name is Red and I’m from the Coachella valley.  Just a music fan like you. Mostly punk and garage.  I spend way too much on records & tapes and I really enjoy writing stuff about bands so here I am in Snail Trail! If you want to send me music to write about my email is Reverling515@gmail.com.  You can also check out my collection at Bandcamp.com/redshurp69

LEECHES – SOUR EARTH  “Your only chance to survive is to leave with us.”

Super excited about this band!  Leeches plays eerie yet abrasive synth punk that’s very unique and really amazing.  Hailing from Gothenburg, Sweden, Sour Earth is their most recent offering of “sci-fi wave” as it is described.  With fast and heavy bangers like Radiation Crust and Garbage to the title track and Leave With Us, which hover and play out like ballads for our dying world, Leeches captures an essence of destruction, struggle and just plain other-worldliness.  This album was mastered by Jim Diamond who worked on the first two White Stripes albums and their previous album, Exo Birth, was mastered by the legendary Geza X so they are definitely getting some recognition but deserve much more.  Yes, Sour Earth would definitely sit comfortably on your Halloween playlist but if you’re a weirdo like me you’ll just put it on any time, day or night.  I was able to get in a little Q&A with Leeches so hopefully when you’re done reading this crap you will go listen and buy a tape!! (wearetheleeches.bandcamp.com)

STN: What instruments are involved on Sour Earth?

Leeches: A bunch of drum machines, guitars and toy keyboards - all run thru the same amp, with various effect pedals. And here and there I used this old, really cool Russian synth (with a name that I’ll never be able to pronounce).

STN: Is Leeches a solo project or full band?

Leeches: It’s just me, and sometimes my wife. A bunch of our friends have offered to join us if we ever start playing shows and stuff. But, we’ll see. The whole point of Leeches is to avoid having a band full of band members. It’s just something fun to do when you’re overly inspired, drunk or can’t sleep.

STN: What would I find if I visit Gothenburg?

Leeches: Some pretty cool bands, a lot of hipsters and a couple of decent shrimp sandwiches.

STN: Your music is described as “sci-fi wave”. How big a role does science fiction play in your songwriting process?

Leeches: Huge. Almost more important than the actual music. Most songs are caused by an overload of reading and dreaming about cool stuff. And by cool stuff I mean everything from weird fiction to things that are real – such as exobiology, doomsday cults and extraterrestrial visitations.

STN: Do you perform live?

Leeches: We haven’t played planet Earth yet.

STN: What other cool bands in your scene could you recommend?

Leeches: I really like what The Freakees are doing. They’re making garage-y punk fun, toxic and weird again. Im also looking forward to the new VIAX stuff (a killer synth punk band from South Carolina). And I recently discovered this insanely good punk band from Singapore, called SIAL. And, of course, you can never go wrong with some Chrome, Timmy’s Organism, or everything ever done by Black Orphan. And if we’re talking current Scandinavian bands, I’d say: Cop Lord, Isotope Soap, Toxic Piss, Viagra Boys and The Mobsmen. To name a few.

STN: What was it like to work with legends like Geza X and Jim Diamond?

Leeches: Great! Both Geza and Jim are super nice people. I was really surprised when Geza wrote me and said that he liked Leeches. Im glad they wanted to take on these songs.
