Snail Trail Newsletter Issue #4

INTRODUCTION:
Welcome to issue 4 of Snail Trail Newsletter!! In this issue we’ve got some local band listening recommendations and live reviews as always but we’ve also got an interview with the always awesome, Kat Monroe!! You all going out to shows?? GOOD!! There are way too many rad bands going around right now for you to miss out on!!
As for Brain Fragment, we’re stoked as fuck to be playing with D.I.!! One of the bands we grew up listening to, one of the many bands that influenced us as musicians from the start. We’re still working on writing music with our new vocalist, Ash, and will hopefully be recording an E.P. soon and we’ve got a Bay Area mini tour booked with our friends Rock ‘N’ Roll Suicides at the end of February. Also, don’t forget to check out our interview with Liberate Justice Entertainment on YouTube!!!
Enough about us, now it’s time to see what everyone else is up to…

LIVE REVIEWS!!!
Whereas:
Whereas is an improvisational hardcore band from Los Angeles that will melt your fucking face off!! It’s loud, it’s noisy and it’s intense. This band is one you have to see live because no two sets are going to be the same. Mad skills and mad passion combined with unpredictability makes this a very unique live experience that you don’t want to miss out on.

Lost Lands:

Grindcore as fuck!! Some brutal riffage and fast as fuck drumming with vicious fucking vocals, Lost Lands is pure aggression and nothing but!! High energy, loud and heavy they’re a band that will make you want to smash shit!! Each song is short and to the point but not without its skill. Their sound is tight but still keeps it raw, nothing too polished or clean and you wouldn’t want it any other way.

Ciphers of Transcendence:
Punk. Fucking. Rock. Hella melodies, hella furry, hella fuckin’ attitude!! C.O.T. is probably the most original punk band most of us have heard recently and have they the live performances to prove it. Don’t fucking miss seeing them live. Sing along, slam dance and fucking rage to C.O.T. or you’ll regret it one day. Every song is so full of sincerity with a message that all of us can relate to. Are you poor? Are you angry? Do you want us all to get along regardless of cultural background or appearance? Then C.O.T. is just what the fuck you fucking need. They’re strong but emotional at the same time with a camaraderie that you can only find within your own local punk scene. These foo’s are the real fuckin’ deal so I suggest you get the fuck out to one of their shows as soon as you get the chance!!

KAT MONROE INTERVIEW!!!

STN: So you're out there tearin' it up!! You got Kaotic Radio and you're always putting on shows at the Doll Hut, what got you started in all of this?

Kat: Hmmm. I started promoting as a teenager for boyfriends bands late 80's early 90's. You know old paper flyer, dial up
phone days. When you had to Xerox out flyers and sit for hours on the phone on your bed with a note pad, calendar and paper. lol My first husband was a musician, in a metal band, I helped him book and promote his shows. That marriage fell apart and I left it all to have a "normal" life. Then I got married again to another musician and was again in the mix of helping out his and other friends bands and I am also an artist. So I quit my job teaching and decided to open an art gallery; a place for like minded artists and musicians to gather. There I was able to help promote our musician and artist friend’s art and music. We had monthly and weekly music and art shows. During that time, I realized how much I loved to help others with their passion for art and music. During that time I met Mac of the Doll Hut where he asked me to host-book Sunday Art and music shows, bringing artists and musicians together. Eventually I had to close down my gallery and got into working with other local promoters to help book shows. It's a super long story really... I started off with just myself at Ms. Kat Monroe Presents and was hosting/booking a few shows here and there at various venues around LA and OC. A few years back I met my partner of Toxic Kat Productions KZ AnRchy and things really started rolling after that. We appeared on Kaotic Radio's Beautiful Disaster show in Aug of 2015 as guests to promote our Toxic Kat Productions shows. Dutchie Hollands The host of the show/now owner of Kaotic Radio and I hit it off and he asked me to be his co-host for the show, he eventually offered for me to host my own DIY music show and it has just snowballed from there.

STN: I'm curious what you taught and why you got into teaching.

Kat: Started off as a school librarian at a Catholic School. Then a substitute teacher for 5,6,7 & 8 grades then ended up a 5th grade teacher at the same catholic school. But I couldn’t do it. I spent more time with other people’s kids helping them than my own. And I couldn’t be myself. It was stuffy I had to hide my tattoos and my personality. You can’t be happy like that. I learned that it is ok to be happy.

STN: I'm also curious about what you've got planned for the future of both your events and your show? Is there an ultimate goal or are you just having fun with it?

Kat: As far as the future, only the universe knows. So far it has not directed me in the wrong direction. I love promoting and helping others achieve their dreams and goals. I guess that is my goal, to help as many as I can doing what I love to do.

STN: Do you do any art of your own?

Kat: I have a ton of art. I don't share it as much as I used to, When I lost the gallery, for a while after I felt like I kind of lost a part of myself and haven’t really gone back to doing art. It may or may not come back to me, but for now I am really enjoying this musical adventure the Universe has set me on. I've been in a few publications for my art and was in lots of art shows, but I don't think I will ever again. Why? I just don't feel it like I used to, it seems like music runs through my blood now.

STN: I know you've been practicing bass, you going to start a band or is it just for the fun of it?

Kat: Bass.. Huh yeah I played some when I was married to my ex with his bands just for fun, a jam kind of thing and I would pick it up every now and the at my art gallery on the open jam nights we had. A few months ago a band asked me if I would pick it up again and try with them, but the band was far and I am so busy.. It was a serious band. I don't think with everything I have going on
I would have time for a serious touring band, and I'm not very good.. but I love and have fun playing it; and if something local and just for fun came around.. Yeah I'd do it.
STN: What events or episodes coming up do you want people to keep an eye out for?     Kat: Dec 31 we are having a special Sunday Beautiful Disaster show. Noon-2pm we are having Discharge live at Kaotic. Rf7 release party at the Doll Hut St Pattys Day March 17 with Unit F Riotgun and Dirty Hammer. Listen to kaoticradio.com Tuesdays 4-6pm pst for the Beautiful Disaster Show and every Thursday 4-6pm pst for Look What Kat Dragged In...

STN: And is there anything in particular that you'd like to put out there? Any shout outs or advice?

Kat: Advice? Go with the flow and Do what you love. Plus it helps to have a supportive partner that is always helping to push you in the right direction. Kyle is the silent part of Toxic Kat Productions and he is great at encouraging me to reach further each time a good opportunity comes along.

Kat is one of the people out there making it happen for all of us!! Those of us who are musicians and artists, and those of us who simply appreciate music and art. She is not one to be overlooked by any means!!  One of the funnest and most genuine people in the SoCal underground music scene these days. Check her out on Kaotic radio and go to her shows at the Doll Hut!! She’s recently become person in charge of booking/coordinating events at the Doll  Hut, which isn’t surprising considering her hard work and dedication, but is pretty funny when you consider the fact that she used to sneak into the Doll Hut when she was a kid.
